The Flower of My Secret is an award-winning 1995 drama written and directed by Pedro Almodovar, which revolves around a successful female novel writer who struggles in her personal life, but manages to write happy-ending romantic books for her readers. Leocadia "Leo" Macias (Marisa Paredes) is an accomplished writer who offers moments of joy and pleasant daydreaming to the women who read her romantic novels, in which everything revolves around love and happiness. Under the alias Amanda Gris, her books are best-sellers all across Spain, bringing her fame, money and recognition. Her personal life, however, is very different from the stories that she depicts in her books. She is married to a rigid and distant military man who is frequently deployed abroad and never offers her the love and passion that she desperately needs. Leo realizes that writing happy-ending novels becomes more difficult each day as her desire to express her pain and distress starts to prevail. She begins by reconsidering her relationships with her close friend, Betty (Carme Elias), and her mother (Chus Lampreave). Writing different books and dealing with her cold husband seem to be the next steps on her agenda.moreless

The Flower of My Secret is likely to be disappointing to Almodovar's admirers, and inexplicable to anyone else.
