The Formula is a 1980 crime thriller directed by John G. Avildsen based on the novel written by Steve Shagan that centers on a controversial crime linked to the interests of a large oil company. Lieutenant Barney Caine (George C. Scott) is investigating the mysterious murder of his former chief and colleague, Major Tom Neely (Robin Clarke). Neely is found dead with a mystical word written in blood on a newspaper and a map of Germany with inconsistent clues on it. Caine is surprised to find out that Neely discovered an effective method of producing gasoline from various chemical substances which was well hidden by the Nazi sympathizers after the World War II. When Caine realizes that Neely was also connected to a large oil company director, Adam Steiffel (Marlon Brando), he has more than enough reasons to suspect the businessman of protecting his interests through elimination of the secret technology. His investigation is endangered by Steiffel's determination to bury the secret along with a lot of people who stand in the way of his business success.moreless
