The Fortune is a 1975 comedy starring Warren Beatty and Jack Nicholson about two incompetent con men running a scam on a glamorous heiress who stands to inherit her family's sanitary napkin fortune. Stockard Channing plays Fredericka Quintessa Bigard, who has suffered the misfortune of falling in love with the already married and morally reprehensible Nicky Wilson (Beatty). Since any attempt for Nicky and Freddie to have relations could resort in prosecution under the Mann act, she agrees to marry Nicky's friend Oscar Sullivan (Nicholson), who's already eager to leave the state to escape embezzlement charges. Oncer they all reach Los Angeles, Freddie becomes suspicious of Nicky and Oscar's not-so-subtle attempts to claim the family fortune. Her resistance to their advances lead the inept scam artists to believe murder is their only option. The Fortune presents a funny and unique story, written by Adrien Joyce and directed by Mike Nichols.
