The Fourth War is the 1990 Cold War drama from acclaimed director John Frankenheimer (The Manchurian Candidate, Ronin, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The Train, Birdman of Alcatraz, Seven Days in May), based on the novel by Stephen Peters. Col. Jack Knowles (Roy Scheider, Jaws, The French Connection, Marathon Man) is a hothead military iconoclast who's not been the same since the war in Vietnam. He is sent to the German-Czech border and wages a personal vendetta against the short-fused Russian colonel Valachev, played quite menacingly by Jurgen Prochnow (Das Boot, In the Mouth of Madness, The Da Vinci Code, The English Patient), not giving him an inch. The end of detente and the last Cold War battle? Well, Knowles throws a snowball at Valachev and the fourth war starts. Also starring Harry Dean Stanton (Alien, Christine, Escape from New York, The Green Mile) and Lara Harris (The Fisher King, Demolition Man).
