The Gallant Legion is a 1948 Western featuring the Texas Rangers in a desperate struggle to hold their state together. The story revolves around Gary Conway (William Elliot), charter member of the Texas Rangers. The law enforcement group takes it as their mission to prevent wealthy and power-mad land barons, Clarke Faulkner (Joseph Schildkraut) and Beaux Laroux (Bruce Cabot), from carving Texas in two and entering the Union as separate states. The two crooked men decide to use their influence to disband the Rangers once and for all. When dubious rumors are spread that the Rangers are up to no good, Conway and his band are followed by an intrepid reporter, Connie Faulkner (Lorna Gray), the very daughter of one of the land barons. Developed by Republic Pictures, an independent studio from 1934 to 1959 that is best known for its decidedly B Westerns, The Gallant Legion earns marks as one of the studio's successes with a big-budget epic.
