Made up of synthetics rather than whole cloth, this lurid concoction superficially gets by thanks to a strong cast and jazzy period detail, but its cartoonish contrivances fail to ...

Sean Penn's not been this fun since Jeff Spicoli and there's plenty of rip-roaring action, but Gangster Squad proves a minor entry in the annals of LA noir.

Typified by Penn's blustery performance, Gangster Squad is sleek, stylish but superficial. Easy on the eye, even easier on the brain, it doesn't last long in the memory.

  • Despite Ryan Gosling's Best Efforts, This Movie Could Not Be Saved

Anyone who has ever seen a noir film before should avoid this one. You know exactly what's coming. The dialogue was truly atrocious. They honestly should have hired the LA Noir videogame writers to touch it up, but I'm sure by the time it was finally filmed, a dozen writers had already been through this watered down mess of a script.

Ryan Gosling does his best, but other talented actors bring nothing original to the table. Sean Penn's usual scenery chewing appears particularly out of place as a result. Don't waste your money.moreless
