The General is a 1927 romantic comedy directed by and starring Buster Keaton. During the Civil War, young engineer Johnnie Gray (Buster Keaton) works on a train in the South that he has lovingly nicknamed The General. He tries to join the Confederate army as a foot soldier, but the recruiting officer says that he is more useful doing his current job. His beautiful girlfriend, Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack), is embarrassed by the fact that Johnnie is not serving in the army, so she tells him that she will not see him again until he gets accepted as a soldier. Many months later, Union soldiers manage to hijack The General with the intention of using it to cut off the flow of supplies in the South. When Johnnie learns that Annabelle is on board, he is determined to save her and to prevent the Union soldiers from carrying out their plan.
