The Gingerbread Man is based on an unfinished John Grisham manuscript and is directed by Robert Altman. Georgia lawyer Rick Magruder (Kenneth Branagh) has a chance meeting with catering waitress Mallory Doss (Embeth Davidtz) and drives her home. After spending the night together, Mallory tells Rick of her troubled relationship with her disturbed father, Dixon Doss (Robert Duvall). When Mallory asks Rick to help her have her father legally committed, the obsessed lawyer eagerly agrees to help her. Dixon is brought to trial and Rick's persuasiveness is key in his commitment order. Rick's satisfaction with the case soon turns to fear when news of Dixon's escape reaches him. As a hurricane blows into town, it soon becomes clear that Dixon is also back in town. When Mallory's car is torched and Rick receives cryptic threats, he rushes to protect his ex-wife, Leeanne (Famke Janssen), and his children from the clutches of the fanatical Dixon. Can Rick protect his family from the forces of nature swirling around them?moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 80

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

With unexpected success, Robert Altman plays a John Grisham mystery in a seductive new key.

  • 75

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

It's all atmospheric, quirky and entertaining: the kind of neo-noir in which old-fashioned characters have updated problems.

  • 60

    Variety Todd McCarthy

There is a trumped-up quality to the action climaxes that is disappointingly perfunctory, and the story's final revelation is simultaneously far-fetched and unsurprising.
