The Girl with the Hatbox is a 1930 comedy. Natasha (Anna Sten) is a humble hat maker. In order to make ends meet, Natasha makes frequent trips to a different city, selling all her beautiful creations to a particular store. Her unscrupulous employers, Madame Irene (Serafima Berman) and her husband (Pavel Pol), have set up a tricky arrangement: they officially register Natasha as living in one of their rooms, but actually use the space as an office. Everything changes, however, when Natasha meets a poor student, Ilya (Ivan Koval-Samborsky), sleeping in the train station. Overcome with a need to help the young man, Natasha offers the use of her room at Madame Irene's. Unfortunately, although Ilya is thrilled, Natasha's employers are not happy at the thought of living with a stranger. As punishment, they stop purchasing Natasha's hats and pay her with a lottery ticket, apparently cheating her out of her hard work. When it turns out the ticket is a winning ticket, though, Natasha and Ilya find themselves in over their heads.moreless
