The Go-Between is the 1970 film adaptation by Harold Pinter of the famous novel by L.P Hartley. It was directed by Joseph Losey and stars Julie Christi and Alan Bates. It is set in the summer of 1900 and shows the secret romance between Marion, a rich young lady of the aristocracy and Ted Burgess, her neighbor who is just a poor, lowly farmer. The story is told from the point of view of a 13 year old named Leo who's been hired to deliver messages between the two lovers. He's a guest at the grand home who has been befriended by Marion. Complicating the matter is that Marion is engaged to a rich viscount named Hugh. As Leo sends the messages back and forth he realizes he's betraying Hugh. With this weighing heavily on his mind he begins naively asking questions about the mysteries of attraction to the adults around him, prompting people to wonder. Can this affair stay secret? And if so, for how long, and with what consequences?moreless
