The Go-Getter is a film about the adventures of Mercer (Lou Taylor Pucci), a shy, 19-year-old boy from Eugene, Oregon, who already feels trapped in his life. After his mother dies, Mercer decides to track down his half-brother, Arlen (Jsu Garcia), in Shelter Cove, California, and then travel to his mother's hometown in Louisiana to scatter her ashes. Yearning to do something out of character, Mercer steals a car and sets out to find his brother. While driving, Mercer answers a cell phone left in the stolen car and strikes up an unusual relationship with the car's owner, Kate (Zooey Deschanel). Kate considers it fate that the two of them met this way, and their relationship deepens via phone conversations throughout the movie. Mercer travels from Oregon to California, to Nevada, back to California, and finally to Mexico, searching for his brother and encounters a cast of offbeat characters including a junior high school crush, Joely (Jena Malone).
