Movie Summary

Chris Weitz

Set in a magical world where people's souls exist in an animal form, called a daemon, outside of their bodies, the film revolves around precocious orphan Lyra Belacqua and her daemon Pantalaimon. "Gobblers," workers from the General Oblation Board, are snatching children from Lyra's area. No one knows where they are taking them, what they are doing with them, or what will happen. But when Lyra finds herself in the guardianship of Mrs. Coulter, head of the General Oblation Board, the puzzle pieces start to fall into place at a terrifying pace. Even more frightening are the horrors that Lyra uncovers.

Metacritic Score

  • A disrespectful film based on a disrespectful book.

I don't care if this film has fine actors or stellar visual effects. the fact of the matter is this is a disrespectful story. It views religion (namely Christianity) as the true evil in this world and in order to have peace, there should be no religious practices or teachings. That's like saying if you want to be safe, don't smile. This logic is fucking ***ed because religion isn't the cause of every war ever. The real cause is people like the author of the original book who look down at those that are religious and do everything they can in their power to make religion disappear. If I were to meet this man (I hope I never do) I'd asking him, "Were you bullied as a child? Because writing a story that explicitly says religion is the source of all evil is bullying" As for the film itself, it's no less guilty; the story is illogical, ***ed, and overall inhumane. Even with great actors and very good visual effects, I don't recommand any body watching this movie unless you're a true atheist who hates religion (especially Christianity) and who support this piece of shit. "I'm an atheist but I don't hate religious people" That's what we call respect, which is something this movie lacks.moreless
