The Good German is a 2006 historical thriller starring George Clooney as a 1940s war correspondent embroiled in a Berlin murder. World War II has ended and reporter Jake Geismer (George Clooney) has been assigned the Berlin beat to cover the Occupation and the Allies' peaceful transition. Then, he receives a visit from a former girlfriend, Lena Brandt (Cate Blanchett), who asks for his help locating her missing husband, Emile (Christian Oliver). Both the American and Russian armies want to find Emile, and Lena's secretive past may endanger her in the new Germany. Jake tries to help Lena, though he begins to doubt some of her stories. He relies on the black market connections of his army driver, Tully (Tobey Maguire), to help find a way out for Lena. Unfortunately, post-war Berlin is a desperate and dark place. Directed by Steven Soderbergh ("Ocean's Eleven"), this noir mystery was based on the popular novel by Joseph Kanon.
