The Good Night from Netflix is a 2007 fantasy about a middle-aged man trying to meet the girl of his dreams, literally. Gary Shaller (Martin Freeman) once had fame as a pop star, but now writes jingles for income, and shares a depressing domestic life with his drab girlfriend, Dora (Gwyneth Paltrow). The only highlight in his dreary existence is the appearance of Anna (Pen''lope Cruz), a beautiful brunette, in his dreams. He consults Mel (Danny DeVito), a specialist in lucid dreaming, a technique that allows people to have control over their dreams. Gary begins to focus more of his energy and time into dreaming as it allows him to pursue Anna. Yet, his waking life suffers and his real-life relationship with Dora begins to crumble. When his dream beauty appears in waking life as Melodia (Pen''lope Cruz), Gary may have the chance to take his life in a new direction. First-time writer-director Jake Paltrow creates a surreal dark comedy about the conflict between fantasy and reality.moreless

The Good Night has flashes of bookish wit but never quite recovers from the metronomic monotony of its first half, which ticktocks between scenes of Paltrow braying and Cruz voguing.

The comedy of male midlife angst dates back at least to "The Seven-Year Itch," when it was sweet and innocent. Each time it is recycled, it gets more sour and joyless.
