Movie Summary

Director:
Sergio Leone
Released:
1966
Rating:
R

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is Sergio Leone's spaghetti western masterpiece, following The Man With No Name, a no-nonsense outlaw who hears about a treasure chest full of Confederate gold lost in the chaos of the Civil War. As most of the country is focused on the battles between the unified North and the seceded South, this man goes treasure hunting. Unfortunately for him, there are two other deadly opportunists who know about the buried fortune, and they're all willing to kill to be the man who walks away with the money. Angel Eyes, a cold-blooded killer, and Tuco, a bandit on the run. The three outlaws get caught in a deadly game that could kill them all.

Metacritic Score

  • 100

    Boston Globe Ty Burr

    Gorgeously stoic art film.

  • 100

    Chicago Tribune Michael Wilmington

An improbable masterpiece -- a bizarre mixture of grandly operatic visuals, grim brutality and sordid violence that keeps wrenching you from one extreme to the other.

  • 60

    Variety

A curious amalgam of the visually striking, the dramatically feeble and the offensively sadistic.
