The Gospel According to St. Matthew is a 1964 film, shot documentary-style, following the life of Jesus Christ according the book of Matthew. It opens with a shot of a pregnant Mary (Margherita Caruso), and a shot of Joseph (Marcello Morante) who quietly contemplates her pregnancy. After sleeping next to a boulder, Joseph is woken by an angel (Rosana Di Rocco) who tells Joseph that Mary will bear the son of God and the two must flee to Egypt to avoid the impending massacre of all the first-born. The massacre is not shown overtly. Jesus' later life and death is treated with the same documentary approach, as he gains followers and eventually the attention of the Roman authorities. Following the Bible literally, the film was cast with non-professional actors and filmed in the Italian district of Basilicata, and Matera. The Gospel According to St. Matthew won the Special Jury Prize at the 1964 Venice Film Festival, and was written and directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini.moreless
