The Great Santini is a film about an embittered man who understands every aspect of war, but is oblivious to love and peace. The film was adapted from the book The Greate Santini which was written by Pat Conroy. The film premiered in 1979 and stars the great Robert Duvall. Bull Meechum (Robert Duvall) is a calloused and serious man of war. He works as an ace fighter pilot and devotes every ounce of his heart to excelling in the area of war. But Meechum cannot match this same kind of commitment at home - in fact, the relationships he has with his sons and wife are almost non existent. He lives under the impression he can solve his problems at home the same way he solves them at work - by whipping his soldiers into shape as a drill sergeant. Meechum is brought to a rude awakening when one of his son's, an 18 year old boy named Ben (Michael O'Keefe) confronts him and proves him wrong. Both Duvall and O'Keefe received Academy Award nominations for their stellar performances.moreless
