The Greatest Show on Earth is 1952 dramatic romance directed by Cecil B. DeMille. The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is world-famous for its ability to captivate audiences and delight all who view the wondrous feats of the performers. Brad Braden (Charlton Heston) works hard to keep his circus running smoothly and making profits, but after the war, times are tough. Braden has to make a difficult decision: he will hire The Great Sebastian (Cornel Wilde), a trapeze star, to draw bigger audiences and keep the rest of his cast and crew in business. The problem is that Sebastian will replace Braden's trapeze artist girlfriend, Holly (Betty Hutton). Holly and Sebastian strike up a bitter rivalry, fighting for top billing, at the same time that they feel an unexpected attraction to each other. Meanwhile, the other circus performers face troubles of their own, including Buttons (Jimmy Stewart), a clown who seems to be hiding a dark secret. As Holly and Sebastian try to hide their romance and Braden tries to stay on top of his unruly cast of performers, possible tragedy and possible redemption lurks around every corner.moreless
