Andrew Lau
Released:
2012
Rating:
R
During the Manchurian-ruled Qing Dynasty, Emperor Yong Zheng creates an elite assassination squad known as the Guillotines, made to eliminate all who oppose him. But as time passes, the Guillotines are deemed expendable, and used instead to persecute the people in a reign of terror and oppression. The arrogant and complacent squad of five young warriors have never failed in 348 missions to eliminate their targets. But their newest mission leaves The Guillotines ambushed, double-crossed, and facing annihilation - both from evil men, and the new firearms that seemingly surpass their cold steel.

Metacritic Score

  • 30

    Village Voice Nick Schager

A corny saga of social and generational conflict, it's ultimately yet another Chinese period epic that functions as a thinly veiled treatise on the nobility of socialist equality.

  • 30

    Los Angeles Times Robert Abele

An action fan could be forgiven for the medicinal taste that this slick but dissipating exercise leaves behind.

  • 20

Time Out New York Joshua Rothkopf

All the solemnity is deadly: Not one of these superhuman gang members registers in memory, and you feel stiffed on gory giggles. Talk about having your chain yanked.
