Alexander Mackendrick began directing this film, but quarrelled with producer Carl Foreman, whose screenplay he found unsatisfactory. He was sacked after a few days and replaced with J. Lee Thompson, who had his biggest success with the film.
Although it was nominated for seven Oscars, the film won only one, for its special effects.
