The Guv'nor is a British comedy released in the United States as "Mr. Hobo". In it, a wandering tramp called The Guv'nor (George Arliss) is mistaken for a lost member of a wealthy banker family. He is first given a large sum of money to spend in order to keep his name a secret. Later, when he is again discovered, the bankers ask him to join the Directors Board of the bank to help save it from collapse. Despite knowing nothing of banking, The Guv'nor manages to quickly climb the hierarchy to the top. Through a series of comedic turns, he twists and weasels around to keep from being found out and put in prison. Directed by Milton Rosmer, this film quickly became well-loved by the British audiences and remains to this day a must-see classic. Many of its story points have been borrowed by today's comedies and it remains one of the forefathers of the genre.
