The Hanging Garden is a 1997 drama written and directed by Thom Fitzgerald. At 25 years old, Sweet William (Chris Leavins) is returning to his childhood home after a long and purposeful absence. Ten years ago, William used to be massively overweight and insecure. His life shattered at the age of 15, when he was caught in the garden with a male friend, Fletcher (Joel Keller). At the time, William was so devastated that he considered hanging himself from a tree in the garden. Instead, he left home and flourished, losing a significant amount of weight and coming to terms with his identity as a gay man. Back at home, William has to truly face his demons for the first time. Fletcher is getting married to William's sister, Rosemary (Kerry Fox), but clearly still has eyes for William. While home, William is haunted by a vision of his former self (Troy Veinotte). He has to find the inner strength to stand up to his homophobic father (Peter MacNeill) and mother (Seana McKenna), as well as deal with the surprises they have waiting for him.moreless
