Rating:

The Happy Hooker is a racy 1975 comedy loosely based on the autobiography of the famous call girl and madam. Secretary Xaviera Hollander (Vanessa Redgrave) moves from Holland to New York to marry her fianc'', Carl Gordon (Nicholas Pryor). After Carl shows himself to be more of a momma's boy than a man, she quickly ends the engagement and takes a job at the Dutch embassy. After enjoying a one night stand with a stuttering Frenchman, Jean-Pierre Aumont (Yves St. Jacques), she is shocked when he hands her an envelope full of cash. The misunderstanding becomes a new career when Aumont introduces her to a number of his wealthy business friends and a high-class madam, Madelaine (Lovelady Powell). Xaviera happily learns the ins-and-outs of the business of pleasure, eventually establishing her own bordello. Director Nicholas Sgarro avoids an X-rating by focusing on the comic situations and extravagant 1970s fashion in this light-hearted American success story.
