The Haunted Palace is a 1963 horror film set in the small New England town of Arkham, where strange - exceedingly strange - things happen. Charles Dexter Ward and his wife Ann inherit a mansion ("the palace", locals call it) built by Charles's satanic ancestor Joseph Curwen, who was burned to death in Arkham 150 years earlier for conducting blasphemous rituals involving the dark gods of a demonic mythology. Charles notices his own great resemblance to the portrait of Curwen in the house, and the picture begins to exert a strange influence over him - will he become possessed by his malign ancestor's spirit?

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • Francis Ford Coppola worked on the film as a dialogue director and general assistant to Roger Corman. He was uncredited.

    • Although this film was advertised as "Edgar Allan Poe's The Haunted Palace" and takes its title from the Poe poem recited by Vincent Price at its beginning, the plot is actually derived (at some remove) from a novel by H.P. Lovecraft, The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward.

  • QUOTES (2)

  • NOTES (1)

    • Although the Edgar Allan Poe films made by Roger Corman were very popular in Great Britain, this film did not get a British release until three years after it was made. Scenes from the film later appeared in another (British-made) Vincent Price horror film, Madhouse (1974).
