The Hawaiians is an epic retelling of James Michener's book Hawaii. Whip Foxworth (Charlton Heston), the grandson of one of the Hawaii's most prominent plantation owners, returns to the island of his birth with a ship full of Chinese indentured servants to find that his grandfather has died. Inheriting nothing from the old man, Whip realizes that he'll have to make his own way in the world. He does so with the help of his Chinese laborers. The movie follows the path of Whip's life as he marries the emotionally fragile Purity (Geraldine Chaplin) and slowly and painfully builds his fortune in pineapples. At the same time in parallel to Whip's world, we meet Nyuk Tsin (Tina Chen), known to all as Wu Chow's Auntie. She is one of Whip's servants, and plays a pivotal role in his success. The turbulence of life in colonial Hawaii plays out in the lives of these two characters as they cope with political unrest, ethnic discrimination, and catastrophic illness - and eventually must face the fact that the gulf between them is not as wide as they had believed.moreless
