The Heart is a Drum Machine is a 2009 music documentary directed by Christopher Pomerenke. The documentary tries to address the question of what is music, truly? Deep down, what is the essence of music? The documentary features interviews with many famous musicians, as well as music scholars, who all try to explain music in various ways. Some say it's a commodity to be bought and sold in the global marketplace while others claim they find music sacred and indeed even biological, as a natural extension of being human. The film includes discussions with Kurt Loder, Matt Sorum, Elijah Wood, Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, Jim Adkins, Mickey Avalon, Fairuza Balk, Steve Berlin, Ivar Bjornson, Wes Borland, Isaac Brock (of Modest Mouse), Jason Schwartzman, George Clinton, Wayne Coyne (Of The Flaming Lips), Kimya Dawson (of The Moldy Peaches), and even more. The documentary's soundtrack was made by Steven Drozd, the main musical genius in the band The Flaming Lips.
