The Heart of the Game is a documentary about the Roosevelt Roughriders girls basketball team. The film begins as the team appoints a new head coach, Bill Resler, and examines the creative tactics that he uses to motivate his team. Several years later, a talented new player, Darnellia Russell, joins the squad. The Roughriders enjoy several successful seasons under her leadership, although they fall short of their goal to win the state championship. Several universities begin to recruit Darnellia, but she drops out of school after her junior year when she learns that she is pregnant. She eventually returns to Roosevelt as a fifth-year senior, but the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association states that she can not play basketball because she has already used her four years of eligibility. Darnellia appeals the decision and the entire Roughrider's team joins in her fight to keep both her dreams and their championship ambitions alive.
