The High and the Mighty is a Warner Bros. 1954 disaster film, based on the novel of the same name written by Ernest K. Gann, set around a commercial airliner en route to San Francisco from Honolulu. The film stars John Wayne as Dan Roman, an emotionally damaged co-pilot carrying the burden of having been the sole survivor of an airplane crash that tragically took the lives of his wife and son. As the flight progresses and passenger and crew relationships and back-story unfold, the nightmare begins midway over the Pacific Ocean with a propeller malfunction. The subsequent engine fire and fuel leak demand a hero to guide the plane to safety before the airplane runs out of fuel. The pilot, Captain Sullivan (Robert Stack), crumbles under the pressure leaving it up to First Officer Roman to step up as the lives of all upon the doomed DC-4 teeter in the balance.
