The Hoax is a thriller drama film released in 2006. The movie was directed by Lasse Hallstr''m, written by William Wheeler, and is loosely based on the book of the same name by Clifford Irving. It stars Richard Gere, Alfred Molina, David Aaron Baker, Hope Davis, Marcia Gay Harden and Stanley Tucci. The film is set in the 1970s and it follows the true story of Clifford Irving (Richard Gere), a struggling author who has failed to achieve success with any of his previous novels. In a desperate bid for success, Irving decides to lie and pretend that he is authoring the biography of Howard Hughes. Along with his friend Richard Suskind (Alfred Molina), he forges handwritten notes from Howard Hughes to convince the publishing house that the biography is genuine. Throughout the film, Irvin struggles to keep up the pretense that the book is real and goes to great lengths to keep the hoax a secret.
