Joining Baggins is the wizard Gandalf the Grey (John Huston). The dwarves needs to reclaim their treasure from the evil dragon Smaug (Richard Boone). Along the way, they battle trolls and goblins. They find help from elves and humans along the way. On the journey, Baggins finds a mysterious gold ring, which he keeps, that will become a central part of the plot in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The group finds Smaug and fights him for the stolen treasure. The animated movie was awarded a Peabody Award for the teleplay. It was also nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation in 1978, losing to Star Wars.moreless
