The Hot Rock is a comedic action film released in 1972 that revolves around the stories of a group of unlucky criminals attempting to steal a priceless gem. The team consists of John Archibald Dortmunder (Robert Redford), safe-cracker Andy Kelp (George Segal), getaway driver Stan Murch (Rob Leibman), and explosives expert Allan Greenberg (Paul Sand). The job begins when Kelp and Dortmunder are contacted by Dr. Amusa (Moses Gunn) about a gem of great cultural significance to his home nation in Africa. The gem was initially stolen hundreds of years ago and then passed through the hands of many nations and individuals before residing in a museum in Brooklyn. The characters plan and execute a heist that is successful, but results in their losing the gem later in the film and being forced to repeat the process several times.
