The House of the Spirits is a 1993 German-Danish-Portuguese drama written and directed by Billie West and based on a novel by Isabel Allende. Set in Chile and spanning the middle decades of the 20th century, this film tells the story of a poor man, Esteban (Jeremy Irons), who falls in love with a rich man's daughter, Rosa Del Valle (Teri Polo). Esteban vows to earn enough money to marry and begins working in the gold mines. After several months of hard labor, Esteban earns enough money to marries Rosa, but she dies from poison intended for her father. After the tragedy, Esteban moves to an abandoned ranch, and spends twenty years exploiting local labor. When Esteban returns to the city, he meets and marries Rosa's younger sister Clara (Meryl Streep). They have a daughter, Blanca (Winona Ryder). When Blanca grows older she falls in love with a local revolutionary. Matters become complicated when revolution sweeps the country.
