The House of Usher is the popular 1960 adaptation of the classic Edgar Allan Poe horror tale from low budget master of horror Roger Corman (Little Shop of Horrors) and legendary novelist -screenwriter Richard Matheson (I Am Legend, The Incredible Shrinking Man). A young suitor named Philip Winthrop (Mark Damon) travels from Boston to the remote family home of his intended bride Madeline Usher (Myrna Fahey). Expecting to meet her family and then retrieve her for a life together with him, he is surprised to find a crumbling mansion with a tight-lipped butler named Bristol (Harry Ellerbe) and a rather disturbed older brother named Roderick (Vincent Price, The Fly). Roderick explains that his family, thanks to a lineage of evil, is cursed with a disease that increases the intensity of every sense. Thus, a footstep is like a clap of thunder and the seasoning in food is like firebrand and so on. Roderick refuses to allow Philip to leave the house, insisting that she is ill and will only get worse as time passes. Roderick, refusing to believe that the lovely young miss he met in Boston could be devolving this way, plans to steal her away. Roderick and Philip go head to head over Madeline while the house itself threatens to crumble at any moment.moreless
