    • TRIVIA (1)

      • Otto Preminger made this film without the backing of a major Hollywood studio, raising the budget himself from a variety of sources. Some of his promoters let him down, with the result that he ran out of money in the middle of shooting; this caused the production to shut down. He promptly sold two paintings by Henri Matisse that he owned, and also his villa in the South of France. Using the funds thus obtained, he was able to finish the film, albeit cutting a lot of corners and working rather faster than had originally been intended; several actors later complained that they had not been paid in full. The movie was a box-office flop, with several critics commenting adversely on how cheap it looked. It proved to be Preminger's last film.
