The Ice Harvest, a comedic crime thriller based on the novel of the same name by Scott Phillips, tells the story of mob lawyer Charlie Arglist (John Cusack) who, together with his partner in crime Vic Cavanaugh (Billy Bob Thornton), robs the mob for two million dollars. Their getaway plan is hindered by an ice storm which has made the roads out of the city of Wichita impassable. Pursued by mob boss Bill Guerrard (Randy Quaid), the two split up to avoid capture, but trouble soon finds them. A conniving stripper, an angry mob enforcer and a drunken friend all inadvertently conspire to complicate their escape. Charlie and Vic realize there is no one in the city they can trust to help them; they may not even be able to trust each other. The Ice Harvest was directed by Harold Ramis and adapted for the screen by Richard Russo and Robert Benton.

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

A droll, dark Christmas treat for adults, a delightful alternative to the usual holiday-themed fare.

  • 70

    Variety Lisa Nesselson

Fine thesping in the service of characters as meaty as they are immoral makes this material a treat for grown up audiences with an ear for sardonic dialogue.

  • 30

The New York Times Manohla Dargis

There is very little fun in The Ice Harvest, which wouldn't pose a problem if the film had some fleshed-out ideas to go along with the booze, the booty and the recycled plot points.
