The Ice Storm is a 1997 film based on the 1994 novel of the same name by Rick Moody. Taking place during the week of Thanksgiving in 1973, the film chronicles two families, the Hoods and the Carvers, as they struggle to find their place in a tumultuous era. The Watergate scandal is consuming the attention of America, but these two New Canaan, Connecticut families experiment with social taboos by acting out. Benjamin Hood (Kevin Kline) and his wife Elena (Joan Allen) struggle to deal with his chronic alcoholism, while their son Paul (Tobey Maguire) goes to New York City to chase after a girl. Their daughter Wendy (Christina Ricci) roams the streets as she begins dealing with her desires as a nymphomaniac. Just when everything seems to have completely fallen apart, and ice storm hits and everything changes. Also Starring Sigourney Weaver, Henry Czerny, Elijah Wood, and Adam Hann-Byrd, The Ice Storm was a critical success but fair poorly at the box office.moreless
