The Idolmaker is a musical drama based on a true story. The film showcases one man's obsession with helping unknown talent to make it big. Vinnie Vacari (Ray Sharkey) is a songwriter and manager whose goal is to find a musician and make him a star. One night at a club, Vinnie watches a band perform. He is enamored with the talent of the band's saxophone player, Tomaso DeLorusso (Paul Land). Vinnie approaches him and convinces him to replace the saxophone with a microphone. After months of practice and Vinnie's guidance, Tomaso becomes a rock star. Due to the success of Tomaso, Vinnie vows to continue finding potential stars. Guido (Peter Gallagher) is a busboy with a world of talent. When Vinnie catches wind of his talent, he takes Guido under his wing. However, his obsession with idolmaking becomes a problem when he lets every aspect of it control his life, worrying his girlfriend Brenda (Tovah Feldshuh).
