The Indian Runner is a drama film that focuses on two brothers who are different in various ways. Frank (Viggo Mortensen) is a criminal, while his brother, Joe (David Morse) is the sheriff of a small town. The film begins with Frank returning to town, and breaking into Joe's home. His return is short-lived, as he leaves town the next day. Later, Joe and Frank's father (Charles Bronson) informs Joe that Frank is in jail out-of-state. He wants to keep this information quiet so their mother (Sandy Dennis) does not become upset. Upon his release from jail, Frank goes back to his home town where he vows to become a changed man, even getting a job in construction. It is a struggle for Frank to stay out of trouble, and when a situation arises that could potentially ruin his life, it is up to Joe to make a decision between right and wrong.
