The Informer is a dramatic film directed by John Ford. Gypo Nolan (Victor Mclaglen) has tried but failed to join a rebel Irish Republican Army due to lack of commitment to the army's cause. His best friend Frankie Mcphilip (Wallace Ford), who is a member of the rebel IRA, is a fugitive wanted by the British with a twenty pound price on his head. With his girlfriend Katie Madden (Margot Grahame), Frankie hopes to start a new life, but Gypo informs on Frankie. Using the information, the British Troops corner and kill Frankie. Gallegher (Preston Foster), an IRA commander suspects Gypo of having informed on Frankie. He orders his men to keep track of Gypo and investigate his suspicion. While Gypo foolishly squanders his money, Gallegner's men keep tab of every penny he spends. Finally, Gypo is taken by the men before the rebel court. As he attempts to acquit himself, he falsely accuses another man as the informer. His false attempt to save himself falls apart, and he ends up confessing to the treachery. As he awaits execution, he successfully escapes to a secret hideout. Katie gives away his location to the IRA, who shoot him down. In spite of his wounds, Gypo drags himself to the church where Mrs Mcphillip (Una O' Connor), Frankie's mother consistently prays for the soul of his son. Gypo asks for her forgiveness for informing on her son before succumbing to his injuries.moreless
