The Intended is a 2002 film by Danish filmmaker Kristian Levring of Dogme95. The film is a period piece surrounding an unconventional and trying relationship between a man and a woman during the 1920's. Forty-something-year-old Sarah (Janet McTeer) and her young lover Hamish (JJ Field) decide to defy all boundaries by traveling to the remote jungles of Malaysia where they hope to work in the ivory business. Hamish finds work surveying the land and building a road for a strange matriarchal family dominated by a woman named Mrs. Jones (Brenda Fricker). After a serious of peculiar events, Sarah and Hamish learn that Mrs. Jones is actually an envious, ill-intended woman who is trying to destroy them. In this movie, Kristian Levring attempts to illustrate what happens when psychological pressures are met with strong external stimuli from the environment. This is a recurring theme in Levring's work. Be sure to check out The Intended if you are a fan of The King is Alive, or any other Dogme95-inspired films.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 50

    Variety Eddie Cockrell

Another ferocious perf by Janet McTeer and an atmospheric Malaysian jungle location are nearly lost in the DV muddiness of period drama The Intended.

  • 40

The New York Times Stephen Holden

The performances are so skillful that the actors almost carry it off. But as the shocks come thicker and faster, the credibility of The Intended, wears away.

  • 40

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

The misguided, delirious result offers the perverse guilty pleasure of watching a roster of distinguished actors earnestly swimming against a tidal wave of silliness.
