The Interpreter is a thriller about an assassination plot that targets a foreign leader giving an address at the United Nations. Silvia Broome (Nicole Kidman) works at the UN as a translator. While working late one night, she overhears what sounds like a plot against the leader of the fictional African country of Matobo. The leader, Edmond Zuwanie (Earl Cameron), is scheduled to arrive at the UN to defend himself against charges of genocide and other atrocities against his own people. Once Silvia reports what she heard about the plot, the Secret Service assigns two agents to investigate it. Tobin Keller (Sean Penn) and Dot Woods (Catherine Keener) arrive in New York to protect Zuwanie and try to discover who is trying to kill him. As he becomes closer to Silvia, Tobin learns things about her that suggest she may be the one who is targeting Zuwanie. Will Tobin's affection for Silvia cloud his judgment, or will he discover the truth in time to save Zuwanie?moreless
