The Intruder is a 2004 impressionistic film centered around a man who attempts to rekindle a relationship with an estranged son when faced with terminal illness. The film was made by French filmmaker Claire Denis (Chocolat, Beau travail, White Material) and is loosely based on the philosophical ideas presented by contemporary author Jean-Luc Nancy in his book "L'intrus". Louis Trebor (Michel Subor) is an aging, ailing man who lives in solitude between the French Swiss border. When he receives news of heart complications, he sets out to allocate an appropriate donor for a transplant. Perhaps his Tahitian son, to whom he is alienated, is willing to help him during desperate times? But why wouldn't he enlist the help of another generous and wealthy son who lives right around the corner? As death slowly encroaches on Louis' horizon, he realizes the urgency of fostering good relations between friends and family. Through non-linear narration, the story of a sad, alienated man who seeks redemption is told. But perhaps Louis is a hollowed man with no ability to love. The Intruder is an excellent film for those who love pictures which emphasize emotion rather than well-developed characters or coherent plot.moreless

Never has Denis demanded so much from audiences as with this shimmering enigma, at once intimate and epic, but it's worth the effort and then some.

The best way to enjoy The Intruder is to surrender to its poetry without demanding cut-and-dried explanations.
