1983
Rating:

The Keep, a 1983 dramatic film, features Klaus Woermann (Jurgen Prochnow), a Captain of the German army who witnesses his fellow soldiers being slain by an unknown force when they are ordered to watch over an old mysterious castle during World War II in a Romanian pass. It seems that a mysterious force was accidentally let out that was initially trapped within the castle's walls. Fearing for their lives and as more and more soldiers continue to die, a Jewish scholar (Ian McKellen) and his daughter (Alberta Watson), who are both fighting to stay alive during the genocide of the Jewish community at the hands of the Nazi soldiers, are forced to come and give answers as they know of the mysterious force known as 'The Keep'. According to Dr. Theodora Cuza, the evil should be released from within the walls entirely to completely destroy the Nazi soldiers but someone else knowledgeable about 'The Keep' has different plans entirely.

    Variety

Buried deep within The Keep's mysterious exterior lies that chilling Hollywood question: how do these dogs get made?

    Miami Herald Bill Cosford

Mann deserves credit for trying new stuff, of course; The Keep is nothing if not ambitious. But it isn't anything more, either. [20 Dec 1983, p.D5]

The Keep has opened just in time - if it had waited another couple of weeks, it would have been the worst horror movie of 1984 and there wouldn't have been anything to look forward...
