The Killing of a Chinese Bookie is a film about a strip club owner who drowns himself in debt. Cosmo Vitelli (Ben Gazzara) owns a strip club in California called the Crazy Horse West. Cosmo is a gambler and when we first meet this character, he is making his last gambling debt payment. But he runs out of luck when he gets himself into even more debt when he loses $23,000 playing poker at an illegal casino joint. This time, the man he owes this debt to is not willing to wait. He demands payment right away, but Cosmo is unable to do so. Cosmo is given a chance to wipe off this debt completely and the way to do so is to kill a Chinese bookie. The mafiosos' plan is to get Cosmo killed along the way so that they can take his strip club. But Cosmo faces good luck when he dodges that bullet that might just save his life.
