The Killing is one of the earliest heist films ever created. In 1956, director Stanley Kubrick (The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey) set out to create a noir film centered around one man's failure to evade the world of deceit, robbery, and greed he's engrained himself in. Johnny Clay (Sterling Hayden), a heist man, is sick of living in constant fear. He wishes to quit the game and settle down with his long-time girlfriend Fay (Coleen Gray). But Johnny plans on exiting with a bang - he plots one last heist before retiring. He devises a complex plan to rob a major racetrack with fellow criminals, but things go awry when tensions rise between them. The Killing is such a good heist film, its hard to believe it was made in the 50's. The film co-stars Vince Edwards, Jay C. Flippen, and Marie Windsor. The Killing is just another reason Kubrick is regarded as one of the best American filmmakers.
