The Last Best Sunday is a drama written by Karen Kelly and directed by Don Most. It was released in 1999. Joseph (Douglas Spain) is an 18-year old Mexican American just trying to get through his senior year of high school. That dream is cut short when he is seriously beaten and left for dead by two local boys who act out of racial hatred and ignorance. When the town sheriff (William Lucking), who is also a bigot, refuses to help Joseph he takes matters into his own hands and kills the two boys. Injured and on the run, Joseph takes refuge in what he believes to be an abandoned home, and finds Lolly Ann (Angela Bettis) staying home alone in the big old farmhouse, while her parents are away for the weekend. The two are forced into close quarters and quickly find that their grudging friendship is changing into genuine respect and affection.
