The Last Emperor is a 1987 film centered around the life of Pu Yi, the last Emperor of China. The film, written by Mark Peploe and directed by Italian legendary filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci, was the winner of nine Academy Awards including Best Director and Best Picture. The story of Pu Yi, aka "Henry" (John Lone/Richard Vuu/Tijger Tsou/Wu Tao) is presented in a beautiful series of flash forwards and flash backwards - beginning with his childhood when he was crowned as Emperor at age three, all the way through to his death at the Botanical Gardens of Peking. The film documents his imprisonment in the Forbidden City, his reign during the Japanese invasion, and his return to the public spotlight in 1959. Bertolucci's artistic ability and vision is evidenced by this film which contains colorful images of the Chinese people and countryside.
