The Last Picture Show is a 1971 drama about the lives of a group of teenagers living in a small Texas town during the 1950s. Duane Jackson (Jeff Bridges) and Sonny Crawford (Timothy Bottoms) are best friends and high-school seniors. Duane is dating the rich and beautiful Jacy Farrow (Cybil Shepherd), while Sonny is going out with the far less attractive, Charlene Duggs (Sharon Taggart). Unhappy, Charlene and Sonny eventually decide to break up and he becomes involved with an older woman, Ruth Popper (Cloris Leachman). Jacy and Duane also eventually split up and she becomes involved with several other men, including her mother's boyfriend, Abilene (Clu Gulager) and Sonny. She and Sonny ultimately decide to elope, but the plot is uncovered by her parents and they are brought back to town by the police. Jealous of Sonny and Jacy's new relationship, Duane decides to join the military and go to Korea. Before he goes, though, he and Sonny take in one last movie at Sam the Lion's (Ben Johnson) movie theater, emblematic of the end of their friendship. The Last Picture Show is a story about how growing up inevitably leads to a loss of innocence.moreless
