The Last Time I Saw Archie is a comedy that takes a stab at life in the armed forces. Set in the last years of World War II, the film follows the Private Archie Hall (Robert Mitchum) and his sidekick Bill Bowers (Jack Webb). Jack Webb both produced the film and acted in it and a younger Don Knotts played the role of a Captain. The real person Archie Hall would later become better-known as a producer. Archie has a big personality, and knows how to get his way with people. His confidence and street-smart intelligence makes his fellow soldiers sure that he is not a Private at all, but a high-ranking spy in their midst looking for Japanese informants. Archie uses all of this to his advantage to avoid work, get off base, consort with women, and generally get up to mischief which alternately lands him in trouble or in the spotlight as a war hero.
