Last Word is a 1995 crime thriller written and directed by Tony Spiridakis. Detroit newspaper columnist Martin Ryan (Timothy Hutton) covers the mob beat with some inside help from his childhood friend, Doc (Joe Pantoliano). Doc used to be an enforcer for the mob and connects Martin with the underworld figures, hit men and strippers. One of the subjects, Sara (Michelle Burke), a stripper, becomes romantically involved with him. A Hollywood studio takes an interest in Martin writing a screenplay, so he heads to Los Angeles with Doc and Sara. The timing could not be better since mob boss Ricky Benzone (Chazz Palminteri) ominously warns him that there are consequences to publishing secrets. What he doesn't know is that Doc has made an arrangement with the producer, Larry (Richard Dreyfuss), to pay off a $100,000 debt with proceeds. Sara does not want her story in the screenplay, because it will lead to painful revelations. Unfortunately that particular story sold the concept. Martin finds himself caught between the woman he loves and his oldest friend.
